About the course
Discover robotics through practical building, programming and problem-solving. This course introduces how robot components, programming and sensors work together to create machines that can move, sense their surroundings and respond to instructions. The emphasis is on learning through experimentation, testing and improvement.
Designed for young learners aged 10–15 at beginner-to-intermediate level, including mixed-ability learners, the course requires no previous robotics or programming experience.
The approximately 15-hour, four-week course combines live online guidance with self-paced hands-on learning. During Weeks 1–2, you assemble and program your robot while developing practical movement, sensor and troubleshooting skills. In Week 3, you use your assembled robot to develop, test, improve and reflect on your own project, with online Q&A support. Week 4 concludes with an individual online demonstration, review and feedback session. A Certificate of Participation is available for learners who meet the participation requirements.
What you'll learn
- Robotics systems: Identify main robot components and explain how programming, sensors and movement work together.
- Assembly and setup: Assemble and connect a robot kit and prepare it for programming.
- Movement programming: Create and modify simple programs to control movement using sequencing, repetition and conditions.
- Sensors and responses: Use line-following and obstacle sensors to create responsive robot behaviours.
- Testing and problem-solving: Troubleshoot problems, test changes systematically and improve robot performance through experimentation.
- Robotics project: Plan, develop, test, improve, demonstrate and explain your own project using previously practised skills.
Requirements
- No previous robotics or programming experience; very basic computer-use skills and willingness to undertake practical work are sufficient.
- Parent, guardian or relative support where needed for computer setup, equipment preparation or difficult assembly steps.
- Learner-arranged access to a suitable robot car kit; the reference setup is KEYESTUDIO KS4036/KS4036F with BBC micro:bit V2.
- For the reference setup: three 1.5V AAA alkaline batteries and a Micro-USB data cable. Estimated equipment cost is SAR277 (approximately US$74), excluding the computer; local prices and delivery costs may vary.
- A computer with internet access and free Microsoft MakeCode with the appropriate kit extension. MicroPython is optional enrichment.
- If using an alternative kit, responsibility for ensuring equivalent movement, line-following and obstacle-sensing capabilities and software compatibility; beginner-level configuration support will be provided.
Course content
Course Delivery
The course will be delivered in the following ways:
· Online orientation: One hour live online orientation during Weeks 1–2.
· Guided practical learning: Eight hour self-paced practical sessions during Weeks 1–2, covering setup, assembly, programming, movement, line following, obstacle sensing and troubleshooting.
· Individual robotics project: Approximately five hours during Week 3 to plan, program, test, improve and reflect on a project using the already assembled robot and previously practised skills.
· Online project support: Q&A support is available during the Week 3 project period.
· Demonstration and feedback: One hour individual online session in Week 4 to demonstrate the project, discuss the learning experience and receive feedback.
Certificate Requirements
A Certificate of Participation recognises participation in the course learning activities, project work and final review. Learners are expected to take part in the practical learning, develop and reflect on their individual robotics project, and participate in the final demonstration, review and feedback session. The certificate recognises course participation and does not represent professional certification. No numerical pass mark is required.
